Update - July 6th The GLCC Chapter of SHRM is sad to announce the passing of Jimmy Davis on July 4th. Jimmy was a long-time member of our Chapter and a current member of our Board of Directors. Update - June 23, 2010 For anyone who missed the June Chapter meeting (Labor Relations and NLRB Update), we have PowerPoint copies of the presentation available upon request. And speaking of labor relations, if you haven't yet seen this, the Supreme Court made a major ruling last Thursday which will cause more than 500 cases to have to be reopened. You can read the entire story here. We are also happy to report that GLCC SHRM has received the Superior Merit Award for 2009. This award recognizes our efforts to be a well-rounded Chapter and put forth the best offerings in every core area for our members. This is the 6th year in a row that we have received this award. Update - May 4, 2010 There is still time to register for the next "HR Investigations" course being offered at LCCC. This is a one-day course that our Chapter partnered with LCCC to create and offer. The Employee Free Choice Act was introduced into Congress today by Representative George Miller (D-CA) and Senator Tom Harkin (D-MA). This legislation "would amend the National Labor Relations Act to allow unions to use the "card check" process - and bypass the secure, private election format - each time they attempt to organize workers." Welcome to 2009 and on behalf of the Board of Directors, I wanted to say that we expect another outstanding year for our Chapter. We finished 2008 with what we hope will be another Superior Merit award winning year, which means that we accomplished tasks in all the areas that SHRM identifies as being necessary to be considered a well-rounded Chapter. We plan to keep the momentum going in 2009. Click here to read more... Archived Updates Speaking of our Chapter meetings, we have been working very hard on the 2009 Programming calendar. We have invited everyone from attorneys to motivational humorists to speak on topics of your interest. We plan to release the calendar in the next month, so keep checking back here for updates. Suggestions for meeting topics or speakers can be made here. Even though the Presidential Election is over, we are still getting requests for the "HR Issues and the Presidential Candidates" document. This was published in one of the free weekly HR Matters E-Tip from PPS. It addresses McCain's and Obama's position on: Employee Free Choice Act, Fair Pay Act, Family and Medical Leave Act Amendments, Minimum Wage and Workplace Flexibility. You can view it here. This continues to be a helpful piece of post-election information. We have moved the SHRM News Feed page to the member-only area of the web site. Chapter members can create a login through our Home Page and view things such as the newsletter (and now the News Feed) there. We've left some of the below-information regarding the Ohio Healthy Families Act available on the site. Even though this proposed legislation was not on November's ballot, we have been advised that it may reappear on the Federal level, in the same form, in early 2009.
